和製英語＜アバウト＞

和製英語に＜アバウト＞というのがある。よく聞くが、英語を少しかじった人が使うようで、英語の達人はまず使わないだろう。

まあアバウトですが、年間一億円ほどの売り上げを見込んでいます。　 

アバウトと相性がいいのは、ほど、ほぼ、おおよそ、だいたい、約。

一億円ほど

ほぼ一億円
おおよそ一億円
だいたい一億円
約一億円

＜ほど＞だけが＜一億円＞のあとにくる。

 ＜アバウト＞自体＜ほど、ほぼ、おおよそ、だいたい、約＞の意味なので冗語 (じょうご)と言っていい。なぜ ＜アバウト＞が使われるのかというと

１）英語を知っている、使えることを匂わせる。

２）＜ほど、ほぼ、おおよそ、だいたい、約＞だけでは目だった表現にならないので、目立つようにする。

３）＜まあアバウトですが＞で、発言内容の責任を減らす。

などが考えられる。

ところで＜アバウト＞は、日本語出では名詞 (体言) だろう。

＜ほど (ほぼ、おおよそ、だいたい、約) ＞ということ。一方英語の about は前置詞と副詞の働きがある。

＜ほど＞は＜一億円ほど＞となるので後置詞ということになる。＜後置詞＞は聞きなれないが

こうち‐し【後置詞】 《postposition》

名詞などのあとに添えて、その語の他の語に対する文法的関係を示す語。日本語では助詞がこれにあたる。

 とあるので＜ほど＞は後置詞といえるが、助詞でもいいことになるが、変なかんじだ。

＜ほど＞、＜など＞は文法上副助詞となっている。

3. (used with a number or quantity) approximately.

   synonyms: approximately, roughly, around, round about, in the neighbourhood/region of, in the area of, of the order of, something like, or so, or thereabouts, there or thereabouts, more or less, give or take a few, not far off, getting on for, circa, as near as dammit, in the ballpark of

 

これからすると、和製英語＜アバウト＞は一番後 (あと) の説明になる。ならべ方が使用頻度順であると、あまり使われないということだ。そして副詞だ。実際よく使われるのは approximately。最後の ballpark は＜(大きな) 野球場＞のこと。

まあアバウトですが、年間一億円ほどの売り上げを見込んでいます。

とでもいえるだろう。普通は＜ごく大雑把な指値＞の意で a ballpark price が使われる。
