ｘｘ合う、ｘｘ合わす 複合動詞相当の英語表現

 

 前々回のポスト " ｘｘ合う、ｘｘ合わす 複合動詞  " はけっこう長くなった。おもしろい慣用表現が少なくない。そして最後に

＜ｘｘ合う＞、＜ｘｘ合わす＞は日本人好みの言葉が多い。

 

折り合いがつく / をつける、＜折り合いを欠く＞人は歓迎されない。

助け合う、わかり合う

打ち合わせる、擦 (す) り合わせる

大雑把には＜人に、場に合わせる＞のが好ましいのだ。

と書いた。チェックしてみると分かるが、＜ｘｘ合う＞、＜ｘｘ合わす＞は慣用表現の宝庫と言える。一部に英語訳も併記したが、日本語と英語の対比もおもしろい。 

１．＜ｘｘ合う＞

 

＜ｘｘし合う ＞は普通＜たがいに＞ (一般的) 、相互に (一般的) ,  代わる代わるに、reciprocal の意で、each other。細かく言うと同時の場合と＜代わる代わるに＞、reciprocal の場合がある。同時に＜ｘｘし合う ＞の場合も each other で間に合わせるようだ。 

 

もう一つは ＜ともに、一緒に＞ together の意がある。

 

言い合う　　ー　to say / speak each other    ＜言い合う＞、. ＜言い合い＞は慣用表現もある。

同時に＜ｘｘし合う ＞

いがみ合う、言い合う　　to growl / quarrel each other

打ち合う、たたき合う、なぐり合う　ー　to hit each other

語 (かた) り合う　ー　to talk each other
咬 (か) み合う　ー　to talk each other　　　多くは慣用表現。議論が咬み合わない。
傷つけあう　　ー　to harm each other
嫌い合う　　ー　to dislike each other
蹴り合う 　　ー　to kick each other
恋し合う　　ー　to love each other
殺し合う　　殺し合い 　ー　to kill each other はおかしく、片方が殺されてしまうと、＜殺し合い＞は終わる。したがって、to try to kill each other が現実的だ。実際に＜殺し合ってしまう、しまった＞場合は　killed each other でいい。

攻め合う　　ー　to attack each other
せめぎ合う　ー　to compete with each other
競 (せ) り合う ー　to compete with  each other

助け合う　　ー　to help each other
戦い合う, (果たし合う) 果たし合い　　ー　to fight against each other
抱き合う　　ー　to hag each other
溶けあう　　ー　to solve, resolve each other / together

 

投げ合う　　相撲用語では each other でいいが、野球用語では相手を投げる / 投げとばすのでなく、ボールを投げることになるが each other でもいいだろう。

握り合う　　　手を握り合う  to shake hands    each other は要らない。
 

張り合う,　競い合う、せめぎ合う　 —　to compete with each other

混ざり合う　 —　to mix each other, together

触 (ふれ) れ合う　　ー　to touch each other   　　to touch は普通他動詞なので、＜触 (さわり) り合う＞になるか。

見つめ合う　ー　to see, to gaze each other
向き合う　　ー　to face each other

 

譲り合う　　ー　to concede
寄り添 (そ) い合う 　　ー　to lean each other, to sit / be close to each other

 

わかり合う　　ー　to understand each other

だいたいは一人対一人だが、多数対多数、一人対多数でもいい。多数の場合は together が使える場合がある。

押し合う　　ー　to push each other　together はおかしい。＜皆で押す＞になってしまう。
込み合う　　ー　to become crowded　これは each other も together はおかしい。

混ざり合う　 —　to mix together　　自動詞　　　他動詞の場合は＜混ぜ合う＞。英語だと to mix things together となる・

 

また each other は相手、多くは対抗相手が必要だが、好意的な相手の場合もある。

 

言い合う　　多くは対抗相手 

語 (かた) り合う　多くは好意的な相手

話し合う 　　これは中立か。 ときに対抗相手、ときに好意的な相手

 

恋し合う　　ー　to love each other

助け合う　　ー　to help each other

抱き合う　　ー　to hag each other

寄り添 (そ) い合う 　to lean on each other, to sit / be close to each other   

 

together はむしろ多くは＜共に、一緒にする＞仲間が必要だ。これは大きな違いだ。

 

＜ｘｘ合う＞は意味が違うものが他にもある。

 

受け合う　　慣用表現　each other, together の意味はない
落ち合う　　慣用表現　to meet each other　　したがって＜落ち会う＞だろう。
折り合う　　慣用表現　　折り合いがつく、折り合いを欠く

かけあう 　　慣用表現　これも each other, together の意味はない。
示し合う　　文字通りでは　to show each other　＜示し合わせる＞は慣用表現。示し合わせる　示し合わせてｘｘする

 

立ち会う　　相撲用語では each other でよさそうだが (立ち合い) 、＜ｘｘに立ち会う＞という慣用表現がある。＜立ち入 (い) る＞も慣用表現。

 
吊り合う　　to balance    each other は使わない
出会う　　　出会い　to meet だが to encounter という私が好きな言葉がある。
取り合う　ー　to try to to take something each other これとは別に＜取りあう ＞、＜取りあわない＞という慣用表現がある。

引き合う　to drag, to pull each other これとは別に＜引きあう ＞、＜引きあわない＞という慣用表現がある。

見合う　ー　to see each other　　＜お見合い ＞は＜seeing each other＞ではなく、match making ＜お見合いをすること ＞がある。おそらく見合う＞ではなく＜見会う＞、＜会って、見る＞ではないか？　

また、＜ｘｘに見合った＞という言い方がある。仕事内容に見あった給料。

上の＜引き合う ＞も＜この給料では仕事内容に引き合わない＞という言い方が可能だ。

さらにその上の＜吊り合う＞も 同じように＜この給料では仕事内容に吊り合わない＞

以上の＜見合う＞、＜引き合う ＞、＜吊り合う＞は意味的には同じグループと言えよう。相当する英語としては

 

見合う
to worth it

引き合う
to pay

つり合う
to balance

似合う
to suit, to match, to fit

 

がネット辞典では出てくるが、使い方を知っていなければばらばい。もっといいのは正しい使い方で使いなれていることだ。基本的に each other の意味はない。becoming という形容詞がある。

 

to suit, to match, to fit は＜合う＞の一つの意味のグループと言える。

 

めぐり合う　ー　　これは＜めぐり会う＞だろう。 これも to encounter 相当だが＜出会う＞より味がある言葉だ。小説 (novel) では＜めぐり会い＞手法がよく使われる。

 

持ち合う 　ー　to share, to hold each other

(寄り合う)　　寄り合い（会合） a meeting, a gathering   ＜寄り合い所帯 (じょたい) ＞という言い方がある。いくつかの所帯、世帯l、家族は一緒にすむ。

２＜ｘｘ会わす＞、＜ｘｘ会わせる＞

 
＜合わす＞、＜合わせる＞は＜合う＞の他動詞、意味としては＜合うようにする、させる＞だが、そう単純ではない。＜合う＞－＜合わす, 合わせる＞のコンビがあるものとないものがある。
 

言い合う　ー　言い合わせる 　　＜示し合わせる＞に近い

これまでの例は実際かなりいいかげんなところ、クリアーカットではないところがある。

英語に＜合う＞、＜合わせる＞関連と思われる接頭辞がある。チェックしてみる。

 

co-, col-, com-, con-, cor-

 

基本接頭辞は con- で、次に＜l＞が続く場合は col- に、＜b, m, p＞が続く場合は com- に、＜r＞がが続く場合は cor- になる。接頭辞は con- は, 基本的な意味は＜ともに＞だ。
